Rather than doing issues-based advocacy or lobbying, we’re striking at the root. Anyone who has tried to make change on literally any issue ever will know that one of the biggest barriers to action is sh*t politicians standing in the way. 

Lucky for us, sh*tty politicians can go out the same way they came in. 

No matter what issues you care about, joining the movement to elect independent representatives is the most impactful thing you can do to create the conditions for positive change.

Nah, we aren’t a culty political group, so no required reading or debate training necessary. We want to avoid jargon and pretentious bullsh*t. All you need is an open mind and a shared commitment to a healthier democracy.

No, political parties have honestly become a bit of a parasite on our democracy. Which is why we are backing the community independents model.

The independents movement is meant to be for everyone, by design. YIP is specifically run by and focussed on connecting gen z and millennials, but that is in no way limited to students. No matter your background or profession, we need everyone on board to give our democracy a makeover.

“The independents” are often referred to as a collective, and while they have some things in common (namely, being independent), they disagree on plenty because they represent different communities. 

Don’t like an independent? No worries, get involved with your community to help find and elect one that you do like. 

The beautiful thing about the community independent model is that an independent is chosen by their community- it's like ‘build a bear’ but for politicians.

If you don’t like your local MP, don’t just whinge about it - build momentum to elect someone better. 

If you don’t like the policy of an independent in another area, get in contact with them! Unlike the major parties, independents are known to be receptive to people's concerns and are committed to making decisions in the best interests of the people they represent (and if they’re doing a shit job at that… guess what we can vote them out!).

Will you agree with everything every independent has ever done? Probably not. 

But disagreement is important in a healthy democracy. What matters is that we elect representatives who are accountable and loyal to their community, not to a party or to vested interests. And we keep an eye on them to make sure they continue to serve the community (and if they don’t, we vote them out!).
